Wartsila VASA 12V32 LN Crankshaft Repair

RA Power Solutions was approached by a leading Cement manufacturing Plant based in Nepal regarding the failure of their Crankshaft of Wartsila Diesel Generator model no. WARTSILA VASA 12V32 LN.

The Cement Plant in Nepal is having multiple numbers of Wartsila diesel generating sets model VASA 12V32 LN, Wartsila 18 V 32, and Wartsila 12 V32. The one number crankpin got damaged due to seizure of the bearing of Wartsila Diesel generating set Vasa 12 V32 LN.

Wartsila Diesel Generator Crankshaft main Observations:

On inspection of all the crankpins visually the Bearing of crankpin no. 3 was observed damaged and bearing material was found in the oil sump.
On removal of connecting Rods from crank pin no 3. A & B bank, it was found that the bearing was badly struck to the crankpin diameter and it was a case of bearing failure.
The Bearing was removed from the crankpin and on visual inspection, it was observed that bearing material was embedded on the crankpin. The radius fillet of both sides of the crankpin was found damaged and the profile of the radius fillet was distorted.
After cleaning and little polishing of crankpin to remove the bearing material the crack detection test by MPI method was undertaken. No crack was observed.
The hardness was also checked and it was observed in the range of 600 HB in a scattered formation which is considered to be on the higher side.
The crankpin was subject to dimensional inspection and the following dimensions were observed.
- Minimum diameter observed- 269.02 mm
- Maximum diameter observed- 270.00 mm

Against the standard diameter of 270 mm, the ovality of 0.98 mm was observed which is considered to be very much on a higher side.

The successful repair of damaged crank pin no. 3 of Wartsila Crankshaft 12V32 in a short time of 79 hrs is an achievement, the grinding of crankpin was undertaken nonstop on 24 hours basis by a team of three technicians of RA Power Solutions.

RA Power technicians have undertaken the grinding of crankpin having a standard diameter of 270 mm. Due to serious damage of crankpin, it is to be undersized by 2.0 mm.

The Wartsila Diesel Generator set has been assembled and is in operation.

Complete Overhaul of YANMAR 6T220-ET main Engine

Description:

Overhaul of 6 nos cylinder head, replacement of valve seats and valve guides. Replacement of all valve stem guide O-ring seals. Checked cylinder heads warpage and pressure testing of all heads at 5 bar.
Overhaul of jacket water, lubricating oil cooler, and charged air coolers.
Dismount and overhaul of VTR 230 turbocharger, renewed the oil slinger, nozzle assembly, and both compressor and turbine side bearings.
Dismount and overhaul all the air starting valves, relief valves, piston rings, and seals were changed.

Withdraw all the pistons, took piston clearances, and check and cleaned piston ring landing and renewal of piston rings gudgeon pins and big end bearings.
De-glaze the cylinder liners.
Took Crank web deflection measurements prior to and after the renewal of main bearings.
Renewed all main bearings shells.
Dismount and overhaul all fuel injectors and pressure test the nozzles.
Dismount and overhaul the fuel pumps and replacement of delivery valves, plungers, and barrels.
Setting of valves tappet clearances.
Overhauled both emergency and attached lubricating oil pumps.
Dismount and overhaul both seawater and jacket water pumps, and replaced the mechanical seals.

Deglaze the cylinder liners with 120 grit emery cloth.
Measurements of bearing cap gaps (k1-k2).
Polished the crankshaft and took journal measurements.
Renewed all main and locating bearing shells.
Took main bearing top clearances by lead wire.
Took crank web deflection measurements prior and after the renewal of main bearings with spring loaded dial gauge.
Took measurements of both normal and locating bearings k-gap.
Dismount and overhaul all fuel injectors and pressure tested the nozzles.

Overhauling & Repair of Marine Engine is in Process

Dismount and overhaul the fuel pumps and replace the springs, delivery valves, plungers, and barrels.
Setting of valves tappet clearances.
Overhauled both emergency and attached lubricating oil pumps.
Dismount and overhaul of the jacket water pump replaced the bearing and mechanical seal.

Overhauling of Main Engine Repair | Repair of Engine Metal Stitching of Damaged Block

RA Power Solutions received an emergency call from a Steel Company based in Indonesia regarding damage of their Engine SULZER 6RND68.

On arrival of our team of engineers, it was observed that lower engine block of SULZER 6RND68 was damaged badly. Hence it required disassembly of complete engine, overhauling and repair of engine block by metal stitching & metal locking.

Following is the brief of job description executed:

Inspection and overhaul of the cylinder covers including the fuel and starting valves located in the covers. The cylinder covers cooling spaces were also inspected, cleaned and fitted back with new O-rings.
Dismount, Inspect and overhaul the exhaust valves, renewed the seals and grinding the valve spindles.
The cylinder liners were cleaned, calibrated and honed in order to restore the liners running surfaces and remove ovality. This ensured that the piston rings perform better and this will lead to a better overall cylinder condition, compared to if honing had not been done. The cylinder liners cooling spaces were also inspected, cleaned and fitted back with new o-rings.

Inspected and adjusted the chain drive.
Retightened the stay-bolts, holding down bolts end chocks.
Took bearing clearances with a telescopic feeler gauge and checked bearing edges by wire gauges.
Crankshaft alignment measurement was taken with dial gauge (autolog method)
Conclusion: The engine was tested on full load for 72 hours & all the parameter were recorded. The engine is performing satisfactorily.
