On the basis of surface geometry reports, the available decision is taken in regard to polishing or grinding of the crankpin and main journal. In the event of minor bearing line marks, pitting, or rough surface it is recommended that these defects are removed only by the process of polishing of crankpin and main journal.

The crankshaft is the heart of the engine and is the most important/expensive component. It is necessary that the crankpin journal and main journal of the crankshaft are periodically inspected and polished. This not only enhances the life of the bearing but saves the crankshaft from any damage in case it is properly polished.

The oil film between the crankpin/main journal and bearings is too thin while the engine is in operation. In case the main journal and crankpin have roughness, burr, pitting, and line marks it can result in the discontinuation of oil film and failure of bearing causing damage to the crankshaft.

We observed that following these unconventional and nontechnical processes for polishing the crankshaft does not remove the line marks or the various other abnormalities which do get developed. In some cases, since this process has no control excessive taper and ovality are created resulting in the failure of the bearing and crankshaft.

Complete Overhaul of YANMAR 6T220-ET main Engine

Description:

  • Overhaul of 6 nos cylinder head, replacement of valve seats and valve guides. Replacement of all valve stem guide O-ring seals. Checked cylinder heads warpage and pressure testing of all heads at 5 bar.
  • Overhaul of jacket water, lubricating oil cooler, and charged air coolers.
  • Dismount and overhaul of VTR 230 turbocharger, renewed the oil slinger, nozzle assembly, and both compressor and turbine side bearings.
  • Dismount and overhaul all the air starting valves, relief valves, piston rings, and seals were changed.

  • Withdraw all the pistons, took piston clearances, and check and cleaned piston ring landing and renewal of piston rings gudgeon pins and big end bearings.
  • De-glaze the cylinder liners.
  • Took Crank web deflection measurements prior to and after the renewal of main bearings.
  • Renewed all main bearings shells.
  • Dismount and overhaul all fuel injectors and pressure test the nozzles.
  • Dismount and overhaul the fuel pumps and replacement of delivery valves, plungers, and barrels.
  • Setting of valves tappet clearances.
  • Overhauled both emergency and attached lubricating oil pumps.
  • Dismount and overhaul both seawater and jacket water pumps, and replaced the mechanical seals.
