In the case of Mirrlees Blackstone K and KV, major series of engines, the normal hardness at the time of manufacturing of the crankshaft is between 21.5 to 26 on HRC Scale (241 to 268 on the HB scale). It is obvious that after the seizure of the bearing, the hardness increases even to the level of 45 to 50 HRC.

The Mirrlees Blackstone allows the higher hardness under a deviation maximum of up to 32 HRC against the standard of a maximum of 26 HRC. In normal situations as per the manufacturer, the crankshaft stands rejected as it has far higher Hardness than the stipulated in the manual.

Field Instruction for Crankshaft Rehabilitation of Mirrlees Blackstone Engine

RA Power took the following action to save the Crankshaft.

  • The Hardness was taken on various spots, not having a gap of more than 15 mm.
  • Hardness was recorded and a maximum hardness of 50 HRC was observed.
  • Since bearing line marks, taper, and ovality on the crank pin were observed, the grinding was undertaken and CR Pin dia was reduced by 3.5 mm approx.
  • The Hardness was reduced and the maximum Hardness of 42 HRC was observed in a few spots. Although the 42 HRC Hardness was on the higher side than the maximum limit of 32 HRC specified by the manufacturer. The Crankshaft was accepted under deviation due to the following reasons:
    1. The higher Hardness was observed in a scattered pattern.
    2. The higher hardness was away from the Lubricating Oil Hole and radius fillet of the CR Pin which are considered to be critical Zone.

RA Power Solutions was recently approached by a diesel power plant based in South America having Wartsila 12V32 and Wartsila 18V32 diesel generating sets.

A serious accident took place due to failure of cylinder liner resulting in to the damage of various parts including lower and upper engine block of Wartsila 18V32 engine. On investigation by RA Power Solutions technicians it was observed that upper and lower engine block suffered severe multiple cracks measuring to total 2900 mm in length and damage of casting into small pieces measuring 300 X 460 mm.

Various options were discussed and it was decided to replace the lower and upper crankcase. The cost of replacement of damage lower and upper engine block of Wartsila 18V 32 was exorbitant with a delivery period of 9 months. RA Power Solutions proposed to repair the multiple cracks and damaged portion by metal stitching and metal locking process. This is a cold process of crack repair and has been followed by our technicians in number of installations all over the world during our service to the industry for last four decades.

The damaged portion of the engine block was given a discipline profile and new piece of casting having similar metallurgical properties as of the parent material was placed and metal stitched using the latest design of metal stitching locks and keys. The multiple cracks were properly marked by our technicians using the latest MPI equipment to identify the cracks. The multiple cracks were also repaired by metal stitching and metal locking process.

RA Power Solutions also undertook the onsite grinding of crankshaft which got damaged due to accident and re-assembled the engine in 16 days time. Insitu Crankpin Machining | RA Power Solutions

Sulzer model 6RTA Engine was reported damaged on high seas near Mombasa on transit to Sri Lanka. On investigation, it was observed that the connecting rod bolts got sheared damaging the lower and upper engine block and three crankpins of the Crankshaft.

A team of RA Power Solutions technicians having experience in undertaking insitu crankpin machining and a team undertaking repair of crack and damaged engine block by metal stitching and metal locking process was deputed on board a vessel within a short notice as all of them have a seamen passport.

On preliminary examination, multiple cracks on the upper and lower crack cases of the engine block were observed measuring in totality 2900 mm in terms of length. Three crankpins were damaged developing taper and ovality exceeding more than 1 mm. RA Power Solutions team of technicians worked non-stop and executed the repair of crankpins by an onsite crankshaft grinding machine. All pins were undersized to 1.5 mm due to the damage.

For the smaller diameter of the crankpin, it is not possible to undertake the grinding by taking the reference of radius fillet due to the space constraints.
