RA Power Solutions was approached by a leading Fertilizer producing company based in north India regarding the requirement of onsite grinding and polishing of compressor crankshaft.

The company has five high-capacity CO2 compressors which have been imported from a leading company based in Europe.

Our team consisting of three technicians along with onsite crankshaft grinding equipment was deputed to the site and following was observed:

  • On dimensional inspection of crankpin it was observed that crankpin nos. 02 developed excessive ovality. It also had deep line marks due to the failure of bearings which are of babbitt white metal type.
  • All the remaining crankpins were inspected and rough surfaces including bearing line marks were observed.
  • The main journal having a standard diameter of 330 mm also had a rough surface and required polishing.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions

Considering the fact that the main journal having a diameter of 330 mm having a rough surface and bearing line marks it was decided to remove the crankshaft from the compressor.

RA Power Solutions technicians submitted a drawing of V-Block which were manufactured in the factory for placement of crankshaft.

The grinding of crankpin no. 02 was undertaken and the final dimensions were maintained between 315.58 mm to 315.60 mm. The ovality of only 0.02 mm was observed.

All the remaining 05 crankpins were polished, removing the line marks and improving the surface finish. The surface finish after polishing was observed at less than 15 RA value.

All the main journals were also polished onsite removing the ovality to some extent and improving the surface finish again to less than 15 RA value.

Repair of MAN B&W Model 5L 16-24 by Using Onsite Crankshaft Grinding Machine

MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 is a very common installation on vessels and the engine is used as Generator. The Crank Pin diameter of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24 is only 130mm and the bearing width is 56 mm. In other words, it is about 2 inches 

This makes the onsite crankshaft repair very difficult due to limited space in between the two webs. Most onsite crankshaft repair companies based in Europe don’t have the equipment and the technology to undertake grinding/ repair of crankpin of MAN Engine Model no 5L 16/24. The repair companies always suggest to remove it from the engine block and send it to workshop for crank pin grinding or reject the crankshaft.

We successfully executed the repair of the crankshaft of MAN Engine Model no. 5L 16/24. Details are as mentioned below:

  • The damaged crankpin was checked for taper & ovality and it was observed 0.49 mm.  
  • Deep bearing line marks were observed.

In the case of Mirrlees Blackstone K and KV, major series of engines, the normal hardness at the time of manufacturing of the crankshaft is between 21.5 to 26 on HRC Scale (241 to 268 on the HB scale). It is obvious that after the seizure of the bearing, the hardness increases even to the level of 45 to 50 HRC.

The Mirrlees Blackstone allows the higher hardness under a deviation maximum of up to 32 HRC against the standard of a maximum of 26 HRC. In normal situations as per the manufacturer, the crankshaft stands rejected as it has far higher Hardness than the stipulated in the manual.

Field Instruction for Crankshaft Rehabilitation of Mirrlees Blackstone Engine

RA Power took the following action to save the Crankshaft.

  • The Hardness was taken on various spots, not having a gap of more than 15 mm.
  • Hardness was recorded and a maximum hardness of 50 HRC was observed.
  • Since bearing line marks, taper, and ovality on the crank pin were observed, the grinding was undertaken and CR Pin dia was reduced by 3.5 mm approx.
  • The Hardness was reduced and the maximum Hardness of 42 HRC was observed in a few spots. Although the 42 HRC Hardness was on the higher side than the maximum limit of 32 HRC specified by the manufacturer. The Crankshaft was accepted under deviation due to the following reasons:
    1. The higher Hardness was observed in a scattered pattern.
    2. The higher hardness was away from the Lubricating Oil Hole and radius fillet of the CR Pin which are considered to be critical Zone.
