RA Power Solutions technicians repaired the Wartsila 4L20 crankshaft on board the vessel while it was sailing. A reputed shipping company based in Kuwait owns the vessel. A serious accident severely damaged the crankcase beyond repair, so the team removed the Wartsila 4L20 crankshaft from the engine block.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions technicians to repair the Wartsila 4L20 Crankshaft

  • On arrival our technicians observed that the damaged crankshaft was lying on the floor.The team designed a V-block and manufactured it on the vessel. They did this to inspect and grind the crankshaft after removing it from the engine block.

We has a tooling by which crankpin grinding can be done without removing the crankshaft from the block

  • All four crankpins were inspected. The maximum ovality of 0.17 mm was observed.

Inspection report is pasted below:

  • The team observed uneven surfaces, bearing line marks, and pitting marks on all crankpins.
  • The team also dimensionally checked all main journals and found them within acceptable limits. The standard diameter of the main journal is 210 mm.
  • The team routinely performed hardness tests, crack detection tests, and surface finish tests and found all results within acceptable limits.
  • The team ground the damaged crankpins and undersized all crankpins by only 0.50 mm. They maintained the final crankpin size between 179.48 mm and 179.50 mm.
