The crankshaft is the heart of the engine and is the most important/expensive component. You must periodically inspect and polish the crankpin and main journals of the crankshaft. Regular polishing increases bearing life and protects the crankshaft from damage when done correctly.

The oil film between the crankpin/main journal and bearings is too thin while the engine is in operation. In case the main journal and crankpin have roughness, burr, pitting, and line marks, it can result in the discontinuation of the oil film and failure of the bearing, causing damage to the crankshaft.

For the last four decades, RA Power Solutions has worked on crankshafts of marine engines and observed that many engineers use non-conventional methods to polish main journals and crank-pin journals just to put the engine back into operation.

The non-conventional methods used are as follows:

I) Polishing of crankpin journal and main journal by Jute rope.
II) Polishing of crankpin journal and main journal by various grinding and polishing mediums.

We observed that following these unconventional and nontechnical processes for polishing the crankshaft does not remove the line marks or the various other abnormalities that do develop. In some cases, since this process has no control, excessive taper and ovality are created, resulting in the failure of the bearing and crankshaft.

Crankpin and Main Journal Polishing Made Easy:

RA Power Solutions, by introducing a lightweight, compact onsite crankshaft polishing machine, has made the crankshaft repair process simple with minimum downtime of the engine. The polishing and grinding machine is inserted from the engine block, and a polishing crankpin is undertaken. The onsite crankshaft grinding and polishing machine is capable of maintaining a surface finish better than the international standards, i.e. 0.2 RA value.

When Should You Opt For Polishing / Grinding?

RA Power Solutions strongly suggest that the polishing of the crankpin should be undertaken periodically as a routine maintenance process. This will not only extend the life of the bearings but also save the crankshaft from any major breakdown.

We offer two options to our clients either they can call our technicians who will visit their site with the portable on-site Crankshaft polishing equipment and undertake the polishing of the crankshaft. Alternatively, we also manufacture onsite crankshaft polishing machines which are simple to operate. More than 70 onsite crankshaft grinding and polishing machines have been sold all over the world.

FAQs:

1. What is crankshaft journal polishing and why is it need?

Crankshaft journal polishing smooths the main journal and crankpin surfaces, removes bearing line marks, pitting or roughness, and restores a finish that supports proper oil film, crucial for bearing health and engine reliability.

2. Can we polish by hand (rope, emery cloth, etc.) instead of using special equipment?

Hand-polishing is often inadequate. It rarely removes deep marks properly, can create uneven diameter or taper, and may worsen bearing clearance. We strongly recommend professional grinding/polishing.

3. What surface finish and tolerances are require after polishing?

Journals must meet OEM-specified finish (e.g. RA / surface roughness spec, often 15 micro-inches or less) and maintain strict tolerances in roundness, diameter and ovality (typically within 10–25 microns depending on journal size).

4. Can polishing be done on-site without removing the crankshaft from the engine?

Yes. With portable/in-situ grinding-polishing machines, it’s possible to restore journals without removing the crankshaft, saving time, cost and avoiding full engine disassembly.

5. What are the benefits of professional journal polishing over replacing the crankshaft or bearings?

Professional polishing extends bearing & crankshaft life, restores performance and smooth operation, avoids costly full crankshaft replacement, reduces engine vibration/noise, and helps prevent unexpected breakdowns.
