A serious accident took place due to the failure of the cylinder liner, resulting in damage to various parts, including the lower and upper engine block of the Wartsila 18V32 engine. RA Power Solutions technicians carried out the investigation and observed that the upper and lower engine blocks had suffered severe multiple cracks with a total length of 2900 mm, along with casting damage broken into small pieces measuring 300 × 460 mm.

Various options were discussed, and it was decided to replace the lower and upper crankcases. The cost of replacing the damaged lower and upper engine block of Wartsila 18V 32 was exorbitant, with a delivery period of 9 months. RA Power Solutions proposed to repair the multiple cracks and damaged portions by metal stitching and the metal locking process. This is a cold process of crack repair and has been followed by our technicians in a number of installations all over the world during our service to the industry for last four decades.

On-Site Repair for Faster Turnaround

Our technicians prepared a disciplined profile on the damaged portion of the engine block and placed a new casting piece with metallurgical properties similar to the parent material. They then carried out metal stitching using the latest design metal stitching locks and keys. Using advanced MPI equipment, our technicians accurately marked multiple cracks and repaired all identified cracks through the metal stitching and metal locking process.

RA Power Solutions also carried out on-site crankshaft grinding after the accident damaged the crankshaft and reassembled the engine within 16 days. Our technicians performed all repairs in-house using portable on-site equipment transported to the site.. Perhaps no other company in the world can offer all repair services under the same roof.
