Running an engine for a long time creates wear, taper, and ovality, which makes crankshaft grinding and polishing an essential activity. In olden times, workshops had to remove the crankshaft from the block and send it to a designated facility for grinding and polishing.
Removing the crankshaft from the block requires disassembling the complete engine, packing it carefully, and transporting it to the workshop, causing high downtime and expense. RA Power Solutions has developed, designed, and manufactured an on-site crankshaft grinding machine that grinds crankpins or journals up to 700 mm in diameter. The machine maintains tolerances within 0.02 mm in taper and ovality, and it is very easy to operate, needing minimal training.
Technicians can take the lightweight machine directly to the site, since it comes in two parts for easy transport.
It inserts into the engine block through the inspection window, letting technicians grind the crankpin without removing the crankshaft entirely. The same machine handles both grinding and polishing, and RA Power Solutions recommends this whenever the crankshaft is opened for overhauling.
This considerably enhances the life of the crankshaft, bearing, and engine, reducing the need for future repairs and replacements.
